Most proteinogenic peptides, except for certain hydrophobic sequences, can be synthesized in a linear fashion using solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) methods. However, longer sequences, particularly those exceeding 70 amino acids, typically require alternative techniques for synthesis.
Electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) as a common technique for peptide characterization, but understanding and interpreting the spectrum can be complicated due to the multiplicity of the data.
PEGylation is now a well-established technique in the field of targeted drug delivery systems. As more PEGylated therapeutic agents receive FDA approval, more attention has been given to site-specific PEGylation of discrete or monodispersed PEG chains.
