Description
KRSFIEDLLFNKV is a highly conserved epitope of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) Protein. The KRSFIEDLLFNKV protein subsequence is exposed on the viral surface and is required for proteolytic activation cleavage and host cell entry. The sequence contains the S1/S2 cleavage site (located at the arginine residue) and is cleaved by serine protease TMPRSS2, which separates the S1 and S2 regions of the S protein. Because the epitope remains exposed (in the “open” spike protein state) and is required for host entry, it is less likely to undergo productive mutations making it an attractive target for peptide-based vaccine development.
