Description
Angiotensin (1-7) acts as a vasodilator in the cardiovascular system and plays a significant role in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). More recently, Angiotensin II (Ang II) is thought to play a role in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection by binding to ACE2 receptors in the host cell. Since SARS-CoV-2 virus binds to ACE2 receptors, with 10–20 times the affinity of SARS-CoV-1 (ie: SARS-CoV), peptide-binding may, therefore, compete with the virus. Ang II is also known to bind to the AT1 receptor which causes internalization and downregulation of ACE2.
